Poets, Prose and Paperbacks
A walk discovering literary connections in Mayfair including stories behind famous bookshops.
Mayfair is the setting for many novels and plays such as A School for Scandal, The Picture of Dorian Gray and A Handful of Dust.
On this walk you will see the home of Raffles the fictional gentleman thief, hear about Oscar Wilde’s wife’s connection with the oldest bookshop in London, hear about a rhyming recipe for salad dressing and see the church that was the scene of many fashionable marriages both real and fictional.
For lovers of book buying/browsing you will see some tucked away bookshops including the longest established antiquarian bookshop in the world and the birthplace of the very first paperback book not to mention the place where a single book was sold for £8m in 1983.
The walk can include a halfway pub stop at a pub famous for its pies.
This walk starts and finishes close to Piccadilly Circus tube and lasts approximately 1.5 hours (without a pub stop).
