Secret Islington – a tour of historic Canonbury

Just off Upper Street and only a couple of minutes’ walk from Highbury & Islington tube the area of Canonbury has a history that really should be explored.

We will hear about the house that was listed even before it was built, see a Tudor tower that gave the area its name and has many stories and mysteries associated with it and see the former summerhouses of this tower now hidden within residential streets. We will also stroll along part of the 400 year old New River which is neither new nor a river. This is George Orwell’s old stomping ground and as well as seeing where he used to live we will pass by one of the pubs that was the inspiration for his perfect pub the Moon under Water.
