The time has come to reveal the winner and the answers of my recent competition. If you have been on my walks or read the descriptions of the walks on this blog you would have found the questions fairly easy.

1.  Where in Mayfair can you buy a small cream tea for under £10?
Sothebys in New Bond Street. The cafe (with proper tablecloths and waiter service) is on the left-hand side of the entrance hall and usually only open Monday to Friday. A “Small Cream Tea” consisting of 2 small scones with cream & jam, a toasted tea cake and as much tea as you want was £8.25 last time I visited. Details of the cream tea are missing from their online menu but I am pretty sure they still serve it. I am now tempted by their £6.65 Bloody Mary (see previous posting for details of this obsession).

2.  Name one drinking establishment (not necessarily in Westminster) where you can buy the King’s Ginger (not counting Berry Bros)?
There are two that I know of: The Red Lion in Crown Passage (just around the corner from Berry Brothers) which features in my Top 10 favourite pubs in London and Drink Shop & Do in Caledonian Road in King’s Cross which is another favourite of mine. If anyone knows any others let me know! The King’s Ginger is a ginger liqueur created for Edward VII to keep him “warm and stimulated” on long wintry drives.

3.  Which perfume shop in Mayfair contains a tiny tea room?
Miller Harris in Bruton Street. A pot for 1 costs £4 but their blends are rather unusual and it is in Mayfair.

4.  Name two of Alexis Soyer’s culinary inventions.
Soyer’s Magic Stove, Nectar lemonade, Soyer’s Sauce to name but 3. You can learn more about Alexis Soyer on my St James’s walk or read the excellent book by Ruth Cowen “Relish”.

5.  Which pub in the City of Westminster was built as a brothel?
The finish point of my Little Venice pub walk – the Warrington Hotel which was owned until about a year ago by Gordon Ramsay. 

6. Where is the garden in the photo below?
